(By Mr. Speaker, Mr. Chambers, and Delegates Kallai, Staton,
Michael, Cann, Adkins, Yeager and Nichols)
Requesting the Joint Committee on Government and Finance to make
a study of the use of chlorine in water purification,
swimming pools, cleaning and industry and determine whether
the use of chlorine should be restricted in this state.
Whereas, The citizens of this state, and more importantly our
Legislature, should take notice of the fact that chlorine is a
substance which can kill human beings and endanger our
environment; and
Whereas, Unfortunately, chlorine is commonly used in our
society on a daily basis and the side effects of such use will
eventually manifest itself in medical problems years from now;
and
Whereas, It would be to the benefit of all of our citizens to
restrict the use of chlorine and find suitable alternatives for
use in water purification, swimming pools, cleaning and industry;
therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Joint Committee on Government and Finance is hereby
requested to review, examine and study the uses of chlorine in
this state, the long term effects of chlorine on humans, animals
and our environment and whether there are any reasonable
alternatives to the use of chlorine and to make recommendationsto the Legislature regarding the same; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Joint Committee on Government and
Finance report to the regular session of the Legislature, 1997,
on its findings, conclusions and recommendations, together with
drafts of any legislation necessary to effectuate its
recommendations; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the expenses necessary to conduct
this study, to prepare a report and to draft necessary
legislation be paid from legislative appropriations to the Joint
Committee on Government and Finance.
